Winners Win because they Will Themselves to Win. Losers lose because they Will Not.

We all set goals, at least we should be. Those of us who do set goals, and through perseverance have reached them, can claim the joys of achievement. Achievement is a great thing for it reverberates through our lives on many levels. We feel good about ourselves when we achieve our goals, and it inspires us to achieve even more. In this regard it is an instrument — an instrument of empowerment — an instrument of power and victory.
Winners and losers are not born — they are made — in the furnace of life, and forged upon the unyielding anvil with the hammer strikes of an iron will.
The little train in the children’s story that never gave up kept saying to him self, “I think I can” — as he slowly and deliberately chugged his way up the steep incline. He eventually made it to the top and won. The marathon runner who had never finished a marathon, whose only goal was just to finish, and only completed the race in last place — also won. Being a winner isn’t always being first. Being a winner is beating your last record, and becoming better.
Winners win because they will themselves to win. Losers lose because they will not. A winner doesn’t win just because they willed themselves to win every time they try to win; they win because they refuse to lose every time they lose.
To a winner failure is not a settlement, but a way station to a stronghold of conquest. The loser settles where they are, the winner is unsettled until they reach that Fort called ‘Victory’. The loser will not sacrifice any more energy or will power — disappointment robbed them of inspiration, and they settled where they were weary.
The winner on the other hand understands that without sacrifice there can be no real victory — for sacrifice to the winner is like fire in the belly, the fuel of inspiration that speaks with assurance, “I think I can — win!” The winner burned sacrifice as a fuel, overcame his psychological fatigue, and reached his final destination.
The same is true with the blacksmith that forges the instrument of achievement. He must thrust that instrument time after time into the sacrifice of fire. Only an instrument that has reached near melting point can be hammered into shape, and the only shape the determined craftsmen will accept is the shape of victory! It is only through the sacrifice of fire can the metal be made malleable and the impurities of defeat be made to leave the instrument of victory.
Sacrifice is the fire; the determined will the anvil and the hammer, achievement the forged instrument. It is the bloody-minded determination that makes each and every hammer strike upon the unyielding anvil one more certain blow for defeat, and one more smash of the iron will upon the forged instrument of achievement.
What matters is that it ‘is’ and that it has ‘become’. For us to ‘become’ we must make the sacrifice, go into the trial of fire, and become malleable, so that we can smash our will against our weaknesses and become something new, something designed to achieve victory. The only things winners are willing to lose each time they lose are the impurities of their defeats! They are willing to lose them until all that is left is victory. That is how a winner is made!
